Episode 2: You’re Not Buying Software. You’re Training A Teammate.

I’ve been thinking about something lately that I can’t quite shake.

Every time an enterprise buys a new AI platform, everyone talks about it like they’re buying software. We compare features. We negotiate pricing. We run security reviews. We talk about integrations, uptime, and procurement.

All of that is important. But I think it’s causing us to miss what’s actually happening.

Imagine you hired a new employee tomorrow. For the first few months, they mostly ask questions. They sit in customer meetings. They shadow experienced people. They make mistakes. Over time, they start recognizing patterns. They remember which customers tend to push back on pricing. They know which implementation issues are usually symptoms of something bigger. They learn how your company makes decisions, what your culture values, and how your best people solve problems. Three years later, they’re one of your most valuable employees, not because they have access to your data, but because they’ve accumulated experience that nobody else has.

Now replace that employee with AI.

Every customer call teaches it something. Every support interaction refines its understanding. Every engineering decision gives it more context. Every successful implementation, every failed proposal, every procurement negotiation becomes another lesson. Slowly, almost invisibly, your AI stops being a tool and starts becoming one of the most experienced “people” in your organization.

That’s why I think we’re framing enterprise AI the wrong way. We keep asking, “Which platform should we buy?” A better question might be, “Which platform do we want learning alongside us for the next five years?” Because once an AI has absorbed millions of conversations, decisions, and outcomes, you’re no longer evaluating software. You’re evaluating the future home of your organization’s accumulated experience.

Before your next AI purchase, ask one question that probably isn’t on the RFP: If we decide to leave this platform in five years, do we take everything our AI has learned with us? I have a feeling that question will matter far more than whether one model scores two percentage points higher on the next benchmark.
