Episode 9: The Matrix Was Wrong About AI
Whenever AI comes up these days, someone eventually references The Matrix.
It’s become almost automatic.
People imagine a future where machines become smarter than humans and eventually start making all the decisions.
It’s a compelling movie.
I just don’t think it’s the right analogy anymore.
The real question isn’t whether AI will think like humans. It’s whether it’ll inherit the best or worst parts of how our organizations already think.
The biggest risk for most enterprises isn’t that AI becomes smarter than your employees.
It’s that your AI becomes really good at learning from a broken organization.
Think about that for a second.
Every company has workarounds.
Processes that nobody questions anymore.
Approval chains that exist because someone made a bad decision eight years ago.
Three different teams maintaining three different versions of the same customer information.
Sales creating spreadsheets because they don’t trust the CRM.
Support documenting issues in places Product never sees.
None of that happens because people are lazy.
It happens because organizations evolve.
They accumulate habits.
Some are brilliant.
Some are outdated.
Most become invisible over time.
Now introduce AI into that environment.
What’s it supposed to learn?
It doesn’t wake up one morning and decide what “good” looks like.
It learns from us.
It learns from how we sell.
How we hire.
How we support customers.
How we make decisions.
How we communicate.
How we collaborate.
If your organization has great habits, AI amplifies them.
If your organization has dysfunctional habits, AI scales those too.
That’s why I think so many conversations around AI miss the point.
Everyone wants to know how intelligent the model is.
I’m much more interested in how intelligent the organization is that’s teaching it.
Because AI is becoming less like a calculator and more like an apprentice.
And every apprentice eventually starts working the way they were trained.
Maybe that’s the real lesson.
The future won’t belong to the companies with the smartest AI.
It’ll belong to the companies worth learning from.
